My Punk Rock Angel: A Case Study
How my own personal angel of death showed up when I was crossing the threshold…
Yours truly, the year 2023.
It was shit. No. Really.
Without getting into the dirty details my anxiety was at an all time high, I was in the process of a nasty divorce and I didn’t tell anyone, but I stopped eating. Not that good kind where you watch what you eat. My hair was falling out.
I’d isolated myself to the point of concern and spent every night in the bath listening to music and crying. (My Spotify all time listens is a punch in the face. I still listen lol)
I know.
BUT WAIT.
Act 2 is coming in hot …
You know how I’m always spouting out psychopomp talk, symbolic deaths etc. That’s what was happening. An identity I had for 20 years was dying. Remember when I said even though you want it, you still have to grieve it?
Anyways, I was doing reiki on a friend. I get mediumship impressions in my reiki - so I saw a “punk rock angel”. Seriously. Black jeans black jacket - black wings!! Cool as hell.
I thought he was there for her and carried on.
I did another reading, guess who showed up? Literally over the shoulder of the girl I was reading for. Hmmm…
Then. I went to a class where the teacher led us through a meditation to meet a spirit guide. When I opened the door, guess who was there? Mm hmm.
I told her. She goes oh that’s Archangel Azrael - a death angel, a psychopomp. She goes yeah he is sometimes described as a rock angel.
Ohhhh he’s been here for ME this whole time.
And then. I asked oh so like a death doula for the living? A man spoke up - “Kayla I swear to god my friend just texted me - she’s a death doula.”
So yeah.
He was there the whole time while I “died”. And once I crossed over, he was gone. Not in a sad I’ve left you kinda way. But like “okay babe you made it and I’m so proud of you.”
They are not coming for you. They are coming to you.
And it’s a beautiful thing.
You Can Believe: Without Believing
Spiritual belief without the Woo … or Religion.
“But I don’t believe in God …”
Good news. You don’t have to. I don’t.
No really. I absolutely do not believe there’s a big bad sky daddy up there granting wishes or doling out death sentences depending on which side of the testament you’re on.
And it’s fine. It doesn’t mean I’m out sacrificing virgins either. I work in corporate ffs. Oh okay I see your point.
Anyways, energy is energy and spirit is spirit … and it’ll come to you regardless what label you slap on it.
My grandfather, born in the depression era, was only ever taught about the mean God. He wasn’t religious. But told me once he saw himself on the operating table during surgery.
You can be Matt Dillahunty atheist style … and still experience the unexplainable. (Or explainable …)
It’s still real. It’s all real.
They still come. Regardless. Across the veil none of that human bullshit matters. Not one bit.
Just believe - whatever that means to YOU.
PS I don’t know shit about crystals or lotus flowers, and think “manifestation” is one of the biggest spiritual scams in history …And dead people still talk to me.
Fact.
The Medium: Myths & Misconceptions
Mediumship comes with a lot of misconceptions. Some are harmless, some are frustrating.
So let’s clear up a few of the greatest hits.
💿 Myth 1: “Mediums are connected to Spirit 24/7.”
Nope. Imagine trying to browse the bookstore while every spirit in the neighborhood wanted to chat. Connecting for a reading is intentional, when the reading is over, so is the connection.
💿 Myth 2: “Doing readings gives you energy.”
I wish. Professional mediumship is surprisingly physical. Every reading is an energetic exchange. After a fair, I usually sleep the whole next day.
💿 Myth 3: “You can get rich and quit your corporate job!”
This one comes up more than you’d think. The reality is there are only so many readings a person can do in a day. A reading isn’t a product rolling off an assembly line. If anyone tells you otherwise they’re selling you a business course.
💿 Myth 4: “Mediums know everything that’s going to happen in their own lives.”
If only life came with spoilers. We don’t watch our future unfold like a movie. We receive little glimpses now and then, just like anyone gets in their reading. We make decisions, learn lessons, and occasionally wonder WTF am I doing, just like everyone else.
💿 Myth 5: “If a reading doesn’t work, the medium isn’t gifted.”
Not every reading is meant to happen, and that’s okay. The client plays a huge role in the energetic dynamic of a session. Even experienced mediums will occasionally have a reading where the connection just isn’t there. It doesn’t mean the client did anything wrong, and it doesn’t mean the medium suddenly lost their ability. Sometimes Spirit says, “Not today.”
💿 Myth 6: “Everyone loves you.”
There are beautiful moments, absolutely. There are also critics, skeptics, judgment, and people who are just mean. Working as a medium asks you to develop a pretty thick skin. In a strange way, the personal growth required is just as important as the mediumship itself.
